Dance at the Pilotes Club! Dynamic Large and Colourful Mid Century Original Gouache Painting by French Woman Artist

1940 - 1960
Description

Not a poster but an original painting! This large varnished gouache on paper was painted by woman artist Josette Faivre in circa 1955, as a project for a poster to announce a ball at a pilote's club on the French national holiday, the 14th of July.

Multi-talented Josette Faivre was a fabric, furniture and graphic designer as well as an artist.. She worked with her husband Max Garnault - the two ran an interior design agency - which means that perhaps she received less credit for her work than if she had been working alone.

Josette's artistic production is striking: streamlined, dynamic colourful and modern. This stunning work is an excellent example of her work.

Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the gouache is presented in a painted oak frame. The overall framed size is 85.5 x 64.5 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mid-century French gouache artworks are defined by opaque watercolour pigments, bold graphic typography, simplified geometric composition, and flattened perspectives. Often produced as exhibition designs, poster mock-ups, or fine art studies during the 1950s and 1960s, they reflect post-war modernist movements.

Artists during this era predominantly worked with gouache painta water-based medium with high pigment concentration and chalk bindersapplied to heavy paper, card, or illustration board. Black ink, graphite pencil under-drawings, and collage elements were also commonly integrated.

Authentic period pieces exhibit subtle paint layering, visible brushwork texture, and matte finish typical of gouache, alongside natural age oxidation on the paper substrate. Period-correct typography, artist signatures, and edge wear consistent with mounting techniques of the time further verify age.

Mount the artwork inside a slim dark wood or natural oak frame with a archival mount board. Position the piece above low-profile sideboards, console tables, or within neutral gallery walls to allow the bold primary colours and graphic forms to create a visual focal point.

Gouache is susceptible to moisture and UV fading. Frame the piece behind UV-filtering glass using non-adhesive, acid-free mounting materials, avoiding direct contact between the glass and the paint surface. Display in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight.
