Description

An 18th Century Delft Jar.

The jar with an outswept rim, over the rounded shoulders of the ovoid body, the body tapering to a circular foot and slightly inverted underside.

The jar decorated with a reserve of flowers and draped wheat husks, surrounding a centre of radiating leaves, enclosing 'No 14'. The underside with makers mark 'BP'.

Date circa 1760.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced in and around Delft in the Netherlands, primarily from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The distinctive blue and white cobalt decoration was originally created to emulate imported Chinese porcelain.

These jars were formed from clay, dipped in an opaque white tin glaze, painted by hand using cobalt oxide pigments, and fired. Many tobacco and apothecary jars were fitted with stepped brass or metal lids to preserve the contents.
