Framed Toile De Jouy Fragment of 'Homage Du L'amerique a La France'

18th century
For Sale by Hand of Glory
Description

A fragment of 'Hommage du L'Amerique a la France' Toile de Jouy fabric, attributed to Jean-Baptiste Huet, 1783-1789. Printed in sepia/deep purple on a fine cream cotton.

The design depicts the alliance of France and America against the British during the American War of Independence.

The central female figures represent the alliance between the French and American nations. France is embodied by a woman outstretching her hand and America holds her country’s flag.

In 1783, the American Revolution came to an end with thirteen American colonies defeating the British. The flag has thirteen stars denoting each colony. France was an ally to America and aided its victory, marking independence from the British Colonies. The United States of America were thus formed. Following the American defeat of the British, the Treaty of Paris was signed to ensure peace.

Toile de Jouy refers to a type of printed cotton or linen fabric produced originally at Jouy-en-Josas near Paris starting in 1760. Characterised by monochrome copperplate-printed scenes depicting pastoral, historical, or allegorical themes, these textiles were widely used for wall coverings and upholstery across Europe.

Toile de Jouy was manufactured using tightly woven cotton or linen grounds printed with copper plates or wooden blocks. Plant-derived dyes, such as madder and indigo, produced the classic single-colour shades of red, sepia, blue, and black on unbleached backgrounds.

Authentic period examples demonstrate fine engraved detail, subtle tonal shading from copperplate processes, and minor hand-dyed unevenness in the cotton ground. Original fragments often exhibit natural oxidisation, uneven weave patterns, and characteristic repeating print dimensions from standard 18th-century printing plates.

Framed textile fragments function as structural artwork when hung above sideboards, desks, or in entryway wall galleries. Pair the dark timber frame and subdued sepia tones with neutral paint schemes, natural wood furniture, and brass accents to create a tailored focus.

Preserve antique fabric panels by framing them behind UV-filtering glass using acid-free mountboard to prevent discolouration. Position the framed piece away from direct sunlight, damp external walls, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent fiber degradation.
