Burr Walnut

refers to the swirling figure present in nearly all walnut when cut and polished, and especially in the wood taken from the base of the tree where it joins the roots. However the true burr is a rare growth on the tree where hundreds of tiny branches have started to grow. Burr walnut produces some of the most complex and beautiful figuring you can find.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian credenza is a decorative sideboard or cabinet originating in the 19th century, typically characterized by a central solid cupboard door flanked by glazed display bays, featuring rich wood veneers and ornamental brass or ormolu mounts.

These cabinets were constructed using solid hardwood or pine frames covered in burr walnut veneers, accented with floral marquetry inlay, curved glass panels, and cast gilded bronze or brass ormolu fittings.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, original lever locks, natural patination across the wood veneer, original curved glass, and detailed hand-chased metal mounts consistent with 19th-century craftsmanship.

A Victorian credenza can serve as a statement piece in a hallway, dining area, or living room, contrasted against contemporary artwork, neutral wall shades, and modern decorative objects.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping or colour fading. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax occasionally to preserve the wood finish.
