It boasts fabulous untouched colour and patina and is constructed from lovely, highly figured walnut veneers. The overall construction, when considering the period in which it is made is extremely robust and high quality.The silver chest also boasts a wonderful original engaved brass lock escutcheon and plate which really add to the appeal of the piece and it is really quite rare indeed for this sort of thing to have survived the test of time. The feet of the stand are also almost certainly original and although the handles to the drawers are replacements they are very much in keeping with what would have been in place original.Silver chests of varying shapes, sizes, designs and qualities were of course extremely popular in antique times due to the high value placed on the family silver and the of course the fact that there were many visitors plus a high turnover of staff in grand 18th century homes.
