Windsor Yew Elm Country Chair Armchair Worksop C1840

19th century
Description

Yew & Elm Country Chair - Northern England - c1840

This Windsor chair is most unusual and makes a very interesting piece of furniture.

This Windsor chair most likely began life in the Worksop area c1840. At some stage during the past 170 years the piece has been re-worked to replace the original hoop top with a stick back upper half complete with curved crest rail. Perhaps the owner at the time desired a 'Thames Valley' style look to the chair. The resulting piece is unique and actually rather handsome and comfortable too.

The chair has an Elm seat base, and legs and crinoline stretcher are in Yew. The chair is strong jointed throughout and will make an excellent chair for daily use if required. The seat height is good and the strong arms offer good support.

The turned parts are robust and the design of the whole piece displays sturdiness. An interesting example and a pleasing chair to enjoy.

Overall an excellent chair and a great example of how antique chairs which are built well can last for centuries and offer practicality and charm in equal measure.

This chair will make a lovely addition to any setting and is ready to give another 170 years service!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
