Art Deco Bronze Sculpture by Ugo Cipriani

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Poirot Art Deco
Description

A fine and large bronze in green patina, by the important Art Deco sculptor, Ugo Cipriani.

A great example of a beautiful, stylised classic reclining nude. Her posture, face, hands and feet all masterfully executed. The artist’s signature signed clearly in the bronze and mounted on a rectangular black marble base.

Ugo Cipriani, was an Italian sculptor born in Florence, Italy in 1897 and died in Paris in June 1960. His father was a sculptor which probably inspired Ugo to study at the famous Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.

One of Ugo Cipriani’s most famous works is a statue of the patriot Oberdan in the Oberdan’s square in Florence dated 1919.

In about 1935-1937 he left Florence to escape from Mussolini’s fascist government and became a political refugee in Paris where he kept on scupting until his death in 1960.

He produced many fine art deco statutes in various mediums including spelter, spelter and ivorine, bronze and terracotta.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco sculpture prioritised streamlined forms, stylised human anatomical shapes, and smooth surfaces, departing from nineteenth-century realism in favour of modernist geometry.

Artisans primarily used cast bronze, chryselephantine (a combination of bronze and carved ivory), spelt, terracottas, and polished marble or onyx plinths.

Authentic period bronzes exhibit distinct cold-casting or lost-wax casting details, period foundry marks or artist signatures, and natural surface patination or subtle oxidisation.

These sculptures are commonly placed on elevated flat surfaces such as sideboards, mantelpieces, or bookshelves where lighting highlights the metallic surface contours.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth or soft-bristled brush, and apply a thin coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually to protect the original patina from humidity.
