Miniature Portrait - Watercolour Painting On Celluloid Of Henry Prince Of Wales - Elder Brother To Charles 1 - Circa 1900
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:Vicky Thomas Antiques
Here is a striking Edwardian miniature painting in watercolour on celluloid of a young Henry Prince of Wales (1594 - 1612) . The elder brother to Charles 1, Henry is pictured here wearing a downturned ruff and russet silken tunic shining richly against a petrel blue background.
Miniature portrait painting on celluloid really gained popularity during the Edwardian era, over the more expensive ivory as a surface on which to paint.
I think that this little painting has a really rich jewel-like quality, and I find the subject beautifully haunting as he gazes out and catches the viewer''s eye.
This miniature painting, backed in its original purple velvet, is framed under a domed glass, and set into a reddish gold metal frame, held in place with small copper teeth ( some of which are now missing ), but the picture is very secure and the missing teeth are unseen when the picture is viewed. Please see the photographs to give you a good idea of how it displays.
The painting is 8cm ...in diameter, and is in good antique condition, with some wear to the reverse of the frame, as previously described.
Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information.
I offer free postage to mainland UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping overseas.
