This charming early 19th-century oil painting depicts a ramshackle street in ‘old Everton’, Liverpool. It’s possibly by the Liverpool-based artist, John Pennington (1773-1841).Two figures, perhaps a mother and child, converse in the doorway of a quaint thatched cottage. While a third figure, a bonneted woman, carries a bundle under her right arm. Washing hangs over a nearby gate. Beyond, further dwellings peek from behind leafy foliage.This was an area that Pennington knew personally. He was born in Liverpool and died at Everton Terrace. Here he’s captured a picturesque corner of Everton, which was probably a stone’s throw from his house.
