Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire bookcase is a two-part furniture piece combining an upper glazed display bookcase with a lower cabinet that houses a drop-front or pull-out writing desk drawer. Pollard oak refers to timber obtained from oak trees pruned at the crown, resulting in dense, characterful burr-like wood grain patterns.

These cabinets are constructed from solid oak frame foundations surfaced with figurative pollard oak veneers, incorporating hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, brass lock plates, and glass door panes. The interior of the secretaire drawer frequently features small stationery drawers and cubbyholes.

Authentic period examples display signs of historical craftsmanship, such as uneven hand-cut dovetails, genuine age oxidisation on the timber, original brass fittings, and natural shrinkage lines along joinery. The distinctively clustered knot swirls of genuine pollard oak cannot be replicated by uniform modern veneers.

Position the cabinet as a focal feature in a home library, study, or living area against neutral or dark muted wall tones. Display contemporary ceramics or framed art alongside traditional bound volumes to create a balanced dialogue between modern and period aesthetics.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice yearly with a soft cotton cloth, following the natural grain direction to protect the veneer. Position the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
