Charlie Johnson Payne, Snaffles (British, 1884-1967)

‘The Gent with ‘osses to sell.’, circa 1910, signed ‘Snaffles’, dated (19)10 and titled ‘The Gent with ‘osses to sell.’ in watercolour, pencil and watercolour, in the original reeded oak frame.

Dimensions: 33 x 31cm (excluding mount and frame) 39 x 36cm overall x 2cm

Provenance: Private Collection, UK.

This is a rare early original watercolour; painted for the print of the same title published by Lawrence and Jellicoe in 1910, as one of a set of ‘Four Hunting Types’. This set of prints were hugely popular and successful, and appear to have been a turning point in the artist’s career.
