Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian occasional table is a lightweight, mobile table produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901). Designed for versatile placement throughout living spaces, these tables served various functional purposes such as holding lamps, reading materials, or needlework accessories.

Mid-19th-century furniture making relied heavily on dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and walnut. Construction featured hand-cut dovetail joints inside drawers, turned solid wood stretchers, and carved or trestle-style support structures.

Authentic pieces from circa 1860 exhibit uneven, hand-sawn secondary timbers on drawer bottoms, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and natural wear patterns along footrests and stretchers. Original drawer knobs were usually secured with hand-cut wooden or brass threading.

Place the table beside contemporary soft seating to serve as an accent table, or position it in an entryway topped with a modern ceramic lamp. The rich timber tones contrast cleanly against neutral walls and modern upholstered furniture.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, and colour fading.
