Tortoiseshell casket with pierced silver gilt mounts, Dutch Colonies, Indonesia, circa 1800

The oval box made from large scalloped panels of faux turtle shell reinforced with pierced silver gilt supports.

Robust silver stop hinge and oval turn catch clasp

This design is based on a betel nut box but not locking was most probably made to hold other less valuable herbs or spices.

In very good sound condition noting repairs and losses to the lid edge, moldings etc and corner loss to one silver mount.

Still in most presentable condition.

9,3/8" x 6,3/4" x 2,3/4" or 237mm x 170mm x 70mm, weight 315 grams.

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Dutch traders and colonial craftsmen in regions such as Batavia (Jakarta) and Ceylon (Sri Lanka) produced luxury goods combining local organic materials with European forms. Tortoiseshell caskets were crafted as high-status containers for storing valuables, betel nut, or spices for affluent colonial residents and export market elite.

These boxes were constructed using natural hawksbill sea turtle shell, which was heated and shaped over wooden moulds to create scalloped or lobed profiles. The shells were reinforced and decorated with pierced mounts made from silver, silver gilt, or brass, fastened with small rivets.

Authentic period pieces display characteristic mottled brown and amber translucency when held to light, alongside hand-pierced strapwork and lock plates.
