Description

A fine quality George III period satinwood and marquetry tea-caddy in the Neo Classical taste each panel crossbanded in tulipwood and decorated with various inlaid laurel-leaf swags, oval plaques of stylised leaves, and on the top and front with bat’s-wing motifs and other designs in various shaded timbers.  The interior with three plain compartments and mounted on ogee bracket feet.  Circa 1785

We deal in 18th and early 19th century furniture, barometers and clocks. We choose our stock for its originality and for the quality of its colour, patination and design.

We are members of the BADA. We do not exhibit at fairs preferring to deal from our Cambridge shop where we hold Open Weekends from time to time.

A George III tea caddy is a lockable wooden box created in Britain during the reign of King George III, specifically designed to store dry tea leaves. Because tea was an expensive commodity, these containers were fitted with locks and positioned prominently in reception rooms as status symbols of fine craftsmanship.
