Henry Schouten was a Belgian painter best known as an animal and landscape painter. He studied at the Brussels Academy and was strongly influenced by the animal painter Alfred Verwee. He was born in Indonesia, around 1857 and died in Brussels, 1927)
Schouten painted in a more realistic and fluid style for his animal paintings, particularly cows, sheep, horses, poultry and farmyard animals. He often painted them in their environment as well as farmers and shepherds and some still lifes. From 1882, he exhibited in Brussels with the Union des Arts.
During Schouten’s career, he often signed his paintings with pseudonyms including Jos Klaus, Joseph Klass, Meulat, V. Marinus, and J. Remis. He died in 1927 in Brussels, Belgium.
