Pair of Restored Antique William Morris Forest Claw & Ball Wingback Armchairs

19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this stunning pair of fully restored early Victorian circa 1840 William Morris Wingback armchairs with hand carved Walnut Claw & Ball feet newly upholstered in William Morris Forest Linen upholstery which has been wonderfully pattern matched

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

These are pretty much the most quintessentially English wingback armchairs I have seen, they are oversized being much taller than normal with a higher, feather filled seat cushion, the legs are hand carved in Walnut depicting Claw & Balls, the upholstery is as mentioned brand new William Morris Forest Linen, it has been perfectly pattern matched from the bed rest, down to the seat cushion, to the front of the cushion and on to the front panel of the chair, even the piping on the cushion has been matched, the seat cushion is reversable so if the worst should ever happen and you stain one side, you can simply flip it over

The chair model is based on the early William Morris designs as is the upholstery fabric which I’m 99% sure is Morris & Co, its similar to Forest Linen without the animals.

The condition is perfect, there is nothing negative to note, this are the finest English wingback armchairs you will ever see

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A wingback armchair features high back support and winged side panels attached to the arms, originally designed to protect the sitter from draughts and trap heat near a fireplace. Key architectural details often include carved cabriole legs, scroll arms, and deep-cushioned seats.

Traditional wingback chairs are constructed using a solid hardwood inner frame, such as beech or oak, fitted with hand-tied steel coil springs and natural fillings. Upholstery materials frequently include woven tapestry fabrics, wool, damask, or leather, supported by polished timber legs.

Authentic period armchairs exhibit hand-carved details on the knees and feet, such as acanthus leaf motifs or claw and ball terminations. Frame joinery typically shows traditional mortise and tenon construction, brass castor fittings on front legs, and evidence of hand-tailored upholstery techniques.

Patterned wingback armchairs function effectively as focal points when positioned in pairs opposite a neutral sofa or flanking a fireplace. Incorporating simple contemporary side tables and quiet solid-coloured rugs helps balance rich textile patterns without overwhelming the room layout.

Maintain textile upholstery by vacuuming regularly on a low setting using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation. Keep fabric away from direct sunlight to reduce fading, treat spills immediately with a clean dry cloth, and apply specialized timber wax to polished wood legs.
