Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A distaff is a traditional tool used in hand spinning to hold unspun fibres such as flax or wool, keeping them untangled during the spinning process. Historically, elaborately carved distaffs were often crafted as courtship gifts or decorative household objects.

Traditional distaffs were primarily hand-carved from hardwoods or fruitwoods such as birch, pine, beech, or oak. The decorative elements were executed using simple hand tools to create chip carving, notch cutting, and geometric relief patterns.

Authentic 19th-century distaffs display signs of genuine hand carving, including subtle irregularities in geometric patterns and natural wear along the handle from repeated use. The patina should reflect age, with smooth, darkened areas where the tool was frequently handled.

A carved distaff functions well as sculptural wall art, mounted horizontally or vertically within a shadow box frame or directly on a wall. It can also be displayed alongside other historic textile tools or folk art objects on a deep shelf or mantelpiece.

Keep the item in a stable environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a light coat of natural beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber.
