Follower of Adriaen Coorte (1665-1707) 18th Century Still Life c1795

A sumptuous still life painting depicting peaches, grapes, plums, exotic birds and butterflies in the style of Adriaen Coorte. It is painted in oil on paper and then glued to a wooden panel. This unusual technique often occurs in the work of Coorte.

Adriaen Coorte ( 1665–1707) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of still lifes. Very little is known of his life, but he is assumed to have been born and died in Middelburg. He became a pupil of Melchior d''Hondecoeter around 1680 in Amsterdam. He was a member of the Guild of St. Luke from 1695 onwards. Coorte’s paintings consist primarily of high-quality, small-scale still lifes. Often square and depicting fruit, vegetables, on a ledge or in a niche, arranged against a dark background. His last known work dates to 1707. The use of a hovering butterfly is sometimes incorporated in his work and may have allegorical significance.
