Follower of Adriaen Coorte (1665-1707) 18th Century Still Life c1795A sumptuous still life painting depicting peaches, grapes, plums, exotic birds and butterflies in the style of Adriaen Coorte. It is painted in oil on paper and then glued to a wooden panel. This unusual technique often occurs in the work of Coorte.Adriaen Coorte ( 1665�1707) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of still lifes. Very little is known of his life, but he is assumed to have been born and died in Middelburg. He became a pupil of Melchior d''Hondecoeter around 1680 in Amsterdam. He was a member of the Guild of St. Luke from 1695 onwards. Coorte�s paintings consist primarily of high-quality, small-scale still lifes. Often square and depicting fruit, vegetables, on a ledge or in a niche, arranged against a dark background. His last known work dates to 1707. The use of a hovering butterfly is sometimes incorporated in his work and may have allegorical significance.ProvenanceBought at auction as an 18th century painting.ConditionThis is a dark painting and requires good lighting to fully appreciate. The paper is crinkled top right corner. Paint thin in places and the varnish a little blotchy.
