Antique Silver Pocket Watch, Errington for Hinds

19th century
Description

The watch has a stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement was made by the Coventry watch maker Charles Errington as a private label piece for Hinds Ltd of London. Hinds started in Lincolnshire in 1825 when Joseph Hinds offered a clock making service. The business traded very successfully eventually culminating in the chain of High Street jewellers F Hinds.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Chester 1899 with a maker’s mark for Charles Errington.

The Errington Watch Company was set up in the 1880s and subsequently bought by H Williamson around 1896. Charles Errington continued to work for the business until his retirement in 1910.

The case is in good condition for such an early piece, general light surface marking and a little unevenness to the back of the watch.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is signed Hinds Ltd, London. Pin-set blued steel hands, a sunken subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There is a hairline running up through the centre of the dial, and several towards the perimeter although all fairly faint.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

NB: Where we have specified a year of manufacture, this is based on hallmarks or serial numbers with published databases. The 'date of manufacture' given by SellingAntiques will vary slightly as the website only works to decades, not specific years.

Declaration

The Vintage Wrist Watch Company has dated this piece to the 1890s.

ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).

Please contact us regarding international shipping.

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.
