Antique Chinese Export Camphorwood Military Campaign Secretaire Chest 1830'S

19th century
Description

A wonderful example of a military campaign Camphorwood secretaire chest, beautiful solid timbers. Made in Canton, China, circa 1830. It has a warm, rich honey colour and exceptional swirling solid camphor sides where the top and bottom are cut from one piece. The chest never had carrying handles which implies it was custom-made to be packed in solid pine containers and transported directly home.

All the brass straps are original and instead of being held in place by brass tacks the maker used hand made brass screws throughout. This is yet another example of why this chest is really the best example of a military campaign camphor wood chest we have seen in 35 years.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Campaign furniture was designed to be dismantled, packed, and transported easily by military officers during foreign expeditions, featuring recessed brass corner brackets and flush handles to prevent damage during transit.

These chests were typically crafted from durable, aromatic timbers such as camphorwood or teak, paired with heavy inset brass fittings, lock plates, and corner mounts.

Authentic pieces feature two-part split construction with carrying handles on the sides, recessed brass handles flush with the timber, hand-cut dovetail jointing, and a central drop-front desk compartment.

Position the piece as a focal feature in a hallway, home office, or reception room, pairing its structured timber profile with neutral paint schemes, modern artwork, and simple table lamps.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage, dust regularly with a dry cloth, and apply beeswax periodically to protect the timber surface.
