Christies auction catalogue not included. I am happy to supply scanned pages from the catalogue relating to this dish.
This magnificent large dish was given to Diver Dorian Ball (who salvaged the Diana Shipwreck c1816) by Captain Michael Hatcher whilst the pair were in the process of recovering the Nanking Cargo.
It is beautifully hand painted in a rich cobalt blue, with further evident traces of enamel detailing. The dish portrays a Birdseye view of four koi carp moving calmly amongst lily pads and flowers. The border of this dish comprises of trailing flowers and foliage.
During the manufacture, the enamel detailing was applied on top of the glaze and as a result, this part of the pattern has completely worn away.
After hundreds of years spent submerged beneath the sea brushing against coral sands and debris, it is remarkable to see that when titled in the light, a ghostly silhouette of the missing detail still remains, connecting with the cobalt blue to portray an entire pattern that once was.
There were only TEN of these fine fish dishes sold in Christies sale, so this really is a rare piece in remarkable condition. It is a large and fragile example that fell to the seabed with a ship and its cargo hundreds of years ago.
Condition: A number of rim chips and frits, two very faint hairlines approx. 1.2cm & 3.2cm. Please see images.
Size: 45cm 17 3/4"inches in diameter.
