19th Century Walnut Miniature Chest

19th century
Description

A Good Quality Late 19th Century Walnut Miniature Chest, With Crossbanded Decoration Top Top, Over Five Long Drawers With Replacement Turned Brass Knobs And Crossbanded Decoration, Raised On Original Plinth Base.

Much discussion is had over the original purpose of almost all miniature furniture and the simple answer is that we will probably never know what the majority of pieces original intended function was.

One use was of course pieces which were made as travelling salesman’s sample pieces, which is where a few articles were made as scale models in advance of a road trip on which the salesman would travel the country showing prospective clients the kind of items which they could produce back at the workshop and take orders from.

Another alternative is pieces which were produced by apprentices attempting to showcase their skills and gain employment at the cabinet making workshop of their choosing. They would make a small piece of miniature furniture and the boss would use this as a way of assessing their cabonet making skills and decide whether to offer them a job or not.

As with all items which we offer for sale this has received a natural wax polish in our workshops before being offered for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 19th-century miniature chest is a scale-replica cabinet produced during the Victorian period, historically constructed either as a cabinetmakers sales sample or as a trade apprentices demonstration piece.

Craftsmen typically utilised high-grade native and imported hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, featuring crossbanded veneers, hand-cut dovetail jointing, and turned wood or bone drawer handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age including natural timber shrinkage, period-correct drawer linings, hand-cut joinery, original brass or turned fittings, and uneven oxidation on unpainted wooden surfaces.

These compact storage items are ideal for placement on sideboards, office desks, or bookshelves to store small items, desktop stationery, or jewellery while adding warmth and historical texture to a room.

Keep the wood clean by dusting regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once per year, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
