Fine Japanese Satsuma Bowl - Matsumoto Shozan

As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this extremely fine quality Meiji Period (1868-1912) Satsuma bowl, the underside artist signed by Matsumoto Shozan, a highly regarded and well recorded artist working towards the latter part of the 19th century. The bowl is extensive decorated to the exterior with a plethora of birds in flight amidst native cherry blossom and bamboo, the blossom vibrantly coloured in enamels, the entire decoration set against a ground of fine speckled gilt. The enchanting interior of the bowl decorated with a band of children in various pursuits beneath hanging wisteria, the main central panel decorated as a temple landscape within a fan shaped cartouche aside a scroll banner of a Samurai warrior working in calligraphy, once again all set upon a fine stippled gilt dust ground.
