Description

Rare early French brass Carriage Clock by Henry Marc (signed) with original and unusual skeleton escapement and subsidiary seconds dial.

The movement strikes hours and half-hours on a bell. It is contained within its early one-piece case, with a beautiful silvered dial, and mask. This clock features a subsidiary Seconds dial, unusual for a Carriage Clock. Roman numerals for the main dial and arabic numbering for the seconds dial. Gilded brass hands on both dials and a central sunburst.

The makers nameplate features under the VI, although interestingly with a different spelling of Henry (ie: Henri) to the engraved spelling on the backplate, which was presumably engraved by the maker himself! Possibly spelt Henri on the dial plate for the French market?

The solid backplate features a shutter action, enabling winding and hand alterations to be made through 'key holes' when the shutter is slid open. There is even a lever externally for fast/flow adjustment at the top of the backplate. The shutter action helps keeps the movement dust free and prevents clock-oil drying out quite so quickly. The backplate also features an inscribed signature (see above).
