William Frederick Mitchell (1845–1914) was born in Calshot, Hampshire where he lived most of his life. However, he later moved to Ryde, Isle of Wight in 1881.
 
He was an artist working mainly in watercolour but painted some oils as well. He was commissioned to paint naval and merchant ships for the Royal Navy, and also illustrated Brassey’s Naval Annual. A lot of his work is in the National Maritime Museum Collection in Greenwich, England.
