Late 19th-century Norwegian, Portrait Of A Lady In Black - Antique Oil Painting

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Brave Fine Art

This beautiful late 19th-century Norwegian oil painting depicts a lady of means, probably a widow, dressed in black.

She’s emotionally bruised and bereaved, yet maintaining an air of high society elegance. Dressed entirely in black with sumptuous furs and conspicuous headwear. Right hand drooped to reveal a prominent wedding ring. Head partially turned to emphasise the light. It’s a sensitive portrayal of a strong woman.

The portrait was acquired from Norway and the artist is yet to be identified. It’s signed illegibly in the top right, perhaps Max H___. Given its style, it’s plausible that the artist trained in Paris under the eminent Carolus-Duran (1837-1917).
