Victorian Inlaid Walnut Tea Caddy. Original Lids. C1880

19th century
Description

15% OFF PRICE STATED UNTIL 1ST JANUARY

Victorian twin tea caddy in very good condition. Unspoilt mellow patina. Inlaid Tunbridge Ware style bands. No missing or replaced veneer or inlays. Lid closes perfectly square on the original brass ‘stop’ hinges. Original lock with a replacement ornate working key. Remains of the original foil lining to both storage sections in far better condition than the norm in particular to the undersides of both lids. Two of the corner supports to the right side lid have been replaced but that is a minor consideration given the very high degree of original features and the condition overall. Both lids are in excellent condition with the original turned wooden knobs. Original veneer lining to the lid interior. One very nice example of the style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian tea caddy is a specially constructed wooden container manufactured during the 19th century to store loose tea leaves under lock and key, protecting a valuable commodity from air exposure and theft.

Cabinetmakers utilised fine timber veneers such as burr walnut, mahogany, and rosewood, frequently incorporating decorative boxwood marquetry, brass lock plates, and polished foil linings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail or tongue-and-groove joints, natural timber oxidisation, original brass hinges, and functional locks accompanied by matching period keys.

A tea caddy operates effectively as a tabletop accent on a sideboard, writing desk, or mantelpiece, serving as a functional storage receptacle for trinkets or desk accessories.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, keeping the box away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or warping.
