Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Batavian Baroque furniture originated during the 17th and 18th centuries in Batavia, the capital of the Dutch East Indies. European Baroque forms were produced by local Southeast Asian craftspeople, resulting in a distinct style that combined Western silhouettes with indigenous relief carving and tropical hardwoods.

These items were typically constructed from dense, locally sourced tropical hardwoods such as teak, calamander, or ebony. Internal seat supports utilised woven cane, webbing, or hessian upholstery bases held together with mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic pieces feature crisp relief carving showing floral motifs, acanthus leaves, or rosettes executed in dense hardwoods. Evidence of hand-planing, wooden peg construction, natural timber shrinkage over time, and a dark oxidised patina are key indicators.

A carved Baroque stool serves as an accent piece beside a sofa, near a hearth, or in a dressing room. Re-covering the seat pad in a neutral modern linen or velvet creates a balance between historical carved detail and contemporary texture.

Keep hardwood furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity fluctuations to prevent splitting. Clean detailed carvings using a soft-bristled brush, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood and preserve the patina.
