Inlaid coromandel jewellery box in very fine condition with a high degree of original features. Coromandel was extremely expensive and tended to be used for boxes aimed at the higher end of the market. Such was the cost that frequently the veneer was only applied to the top and front of the box with ebonised veneer applied to the sides and back…as with this particular example. All veneer is original and complete. Inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and escutcheon with particularly attractive surrounds comprising of Mother of Pearl and abalone shell to add a splash of colour superior to any other form of inlay used on antique boxes of any period. The lid closes perfectly square on the original brass ‘stop’ hinges. Original lock with a replacement working key supplied. The original panel to the lid interior would have once folded forward but as is VERY frequently the case the paper side folds that supported the panel ripped and a previous owner has glued the panel in place, it does not affect the appearance as the panel is free of any tears or stains. The tray comprises 17 sections and all dividers are in excellent condition as are all lids, all material and the knobs to the two lids are original and the pull tabs are still present!! Obviously this box has had VERY little use over the course of circa 150 years. Open storage beneath the tray with the original lining throughout in very clean condition. The box was original made to serve as a sewing/work box but the majority of boxes of the style are now put to modern day use as jewellery boxes, the small sections in the tray and the open storage space beneath making it ideal for the purpose. Certainly more attractive than most modern produced jewellery boxes, of superior construction than most and without doubt a better investment given the condition and degree of original features.
