Oil Painting By Harden Sidney Melville (1824-1894)

A fine oil on canvas by the artist Harden Sidney Melville (1824-1894). The painting depicts a heavily laden wagon pulled by two horses and driven by a man, and boy, as a dog runs alongside. The setting in the snow is beautifully captured with a great feeling of the driving snow and biting cold. The technique of the work is confident and quick with a wonderful ability to capture the movement of the horses and figures. The painting does not appear to be signed and may well have been created as an advertising piece but it does retain the title label on the reverse of the work and there can be no doubt that the piece is by the artist. Harden Sidney Melville was a painter, illustrator and draughtsman who exhibited widely including two paintings and a drawing of an equestrian statue at the Royal Academy in 1859 and 1864. Ten works appeared at the British Institution from 1848 to 1865, and he exhibited seventeen works at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street between 1847 and 1879. Me...
