Fine and rare pair of late C18th George III period reverse-painted glass portrait pictures of aristocratic ladies, probably Chinese Export.
Beautifully painted pair of portraits depicting elegantly dressed noble ladies , one shown holding a fan by a draped column with a landscape beyond, the other sitter shown with a flowering fruit tree in a jardiniere.
Both retaining strong original colours with only minor degradation and losses to the reverse-painted glass surface, commensurate with their age and medium.
Probably Chinese Export paintings commissioned by wealthy nobility from skilled Chinese painters , who served a flourishing industry with the West for exotic export wares such as these . The portraits were possibly copied onto glass from original oil-on-canvas portraits supplied to the artist.
The Chinese attribution is further supported perhaps by the interpretation of the shape of the eyes of the sitters and the elongated shape of the hands , both alluding to the work of a Chinese artist.
In their original English Georgian period carved and ebonised pear-wood “Hogarth” style frames with gilded and carved slips .
