Large English Antique Brass Desk Magnifying Glass / Paperweight C.1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

Always very popular and a very useful desk-top accessory. These large circular magnifiers actually are the condenser or magnifier from a Magic Lantern dating to around 1910; they are rescued, polished up and put back to use in the modern day.

This one is made from polished brass and is excellent quality having a lovely domed lens rather than flat on top, un-marked but probably by Optimus.

Wonderful condition, with a good magnification and a hefty piece to keep those papers in place. 4 1/4" in diameter x 2 3/4" high to top of dome.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early 20th century, heavy optical glass and brass dome paperweights served a dual function: holding down loose correspondence on study desks while providing magnification for reading fine print or inspecting maps.

These items were typically constructed from a heavy ground-glass convex optical lens set into a turned solid brass frame or collar, often decorated with reeded or milled borders.

Authentic pieces feature substantial weight, precision hand-turned brass construction with minor manufacturing marks, thick optical glass free from modern moulding seams, and authentic surface patination.

This type of decorative object is typically placed atop a stack of hardback books, positioned on an executive office desk, or displayed on a library shelf alongside geographical globes and instruments.

Clean the glass lens with a soft microfibre cloth. If desired, polish the brass casing with a specialized metal restorer, avoiding immersion in water to prevent moisture entering the lens seal.
