Grand Pair Old Sheffield Plate Candelabra by Blagden, Hodgson & Co.

19th century
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A grand pair of Regency era Old Sheffield Plate (OSP) candelabra each base marked with a cross over globe for Blagden, Hodgson & Co. of Nursery Street, Sheffield and dates to 1821.

Old Sheffield Plate is highly sought-after and collectable not to be confused with later EPNS or Electro-Plated Nickel Silver. Old Sheffield Plate was invented by Thomas Boulsover, of Sheffield's Cutlers Company, in 1743. The technique Boulsover developed was to sandwich an ingot of copper between two plates of silver, tightly bind it with wire, heat it in a furnace and then mill it out in to sheet, from which objects could be made.

This large impressive pair are beautifully decorated with elements of hand-chasing. They remain in excellent condition with high points of the copper showing through which is just how they should be and should be left so.

When dismantled you are able to create a pair of candlesticks which can be used in a different setting.

They span 20" across x 6" deep (base) x 22 1/2" tall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to an eighteenth and nineteenth-century process of fusing a layer of sterling silver onto a copper ingot before rolling and shaping it into hollowware and table accessories.

These items were produced by bonding silver sheets to copper, hammering or machine-stamping component parts, and soldering them together. Bases were frequently filled with resin or pitch to provide weight and balance.

Authentic pieces often exhibit minor copper exposure known as bleed-through on raised areas, visible hand-solder joints, distinct maker marks, and a lack of late-nineteenth-century electroplating stamps.

Candelabra serve as focal points when arranged along the centre of a formal dining table, positioned symmetrically on a buffet sideboard, or displayed against contemporary minimalist backdrops.

Care involves applying mild, non-abrasive silver polish with soft cotton cloths to prevent wearing down the silver layer, alongside storing pieces in dry conditions to minimise tarnishing.
