Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A nineteenth-century ebonised and gilt overmantel mirror typically features a dark, black-stained wood frame contrasted with leafed gilding or plaster mouldings. Commonly produced during the Louis Philippe and Victorian eras, these mirrors feature soft rounded top corners, flat bases designed to sit flush against a fireplace mantelpiece, and decorative beaded or foliate borders.

These frames were constructed using solid timber bases, such as pine or hardwood, which were stained or lacquered black to imitate ebony. Ornamental detailing was achieved using composition relief mouldings, which were subsequently hand-gilded with gold leaf or metal leaf, surrounding silvered mirror glass.

Authentic nineteenth-century mirrors often show age-appropriate wear, such as gentle distressing to the gilding, subtle cracking in the composition ornamentation (known as craquelure), oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-cut timber backing boards.

In contemporary interior design, an ebonised and gilt mirror serves as a strong focal point when positioned above a fireplace, console table, or side cabinet. The dark ebonised frame offers a striking contrast against neutral or painted walls, while the gilded detailing complements both period architecture and modern furnishings.

Maintain the frame by gently dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush to prevent damage to delicate gold leaf and lacquer. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or solvent-based polishes on gilded or ebonised surfaces, and clean the glass separately using a damp cloth applied carefully away from the frame edges.
