A rare and fine-quality set of four novelty silver-plated Toddy Ladles in their original case, barley twist column handles, the terminals formed as characters from Charles Dickens 'Pickwick Papers', namely, Mr. Pickwick and others.. Made by the firm of William Wheatcroft Harrison (18571896). These have a Victorian lozenge mark that indicates the date of manufacture as 1870. Superb quality, marks rubbed, not as clear on one ladle, but the other three crisp, and just a most wonderful set. Measuring 21cm in length, they are decorative and very usable. How good would these look around the Christmas table?
I cannot think of a more original gift or present for a fan of Charles Dickens, cased within their original box, a little worse for wear consistent with age. Purple silk-lined interior and written in gilded lettering,'THE CHARLES DICKENS PICKWICK TODDY LADLES REGISTERED'.
Silver versions of this, if you can find them, sell for in excess of 3,000. These sets rarely surface.
