Magnificent Antique English Lap Desk in Rosewood & Amboyna C.1840

Description

A wonderfully decorative Victorian writing slope or lap desk dating to around 1840 and unusually finished in Rosewood and Amboyna combination, both exotic and very expensive timbers, making a refreshing change from the more commonly found wood finishes. The deep rich colours are further enhanced with an continuous ebony and boxwood stringing

The interior is quality all-round with the two-tone stringing being and the large lidded compartment. In front of this compartment is a removable pen trough or tray and flanked either side with sloped compartments for nibs and the like. There are two brass topped inkwells, both without damage.

Under the top of half of the gold tooled leather writing surface is a large storage compartment for letters, stationery and the like.

Superb condition, measuring 14" x 9" x 4 1/4" tall at rear. Complete with working tasselled key.
