The technique is bold and confident with big splashes of colour from thick brushes and using the tone of the board to give outline and definition. The piece is titled ‘Silver Birch’ on the slip. The landscape shown is undoubtedly the artist’s native Canada probably Ottawa. The piece is signed: ‘Paul Alfred’ which is typical for the artist who never signed his full name. Paul Alfred Ernest Meister (1892-1959), was born in the Staffordshire and studied at the Polytechnic School of Art. In 1908 his family moved to Ottawa, where Paul worked for a time as a draftsman. Early in WWI he joined the army and served in England. After the war he studied for a short time at London''s Chelsea Polytechnic School.
