A comic caricature engraving by Cruikshank titled ‘A curious Junto of slandering elves, -or- list''ners seldom hear good of themselves’.
A group of elderly ladies sit around a tea table gossiping.
The central figure has a gouty leg resting on a stool and reads to the others from a pile of letters. One listens with an ear trumpet.
The scene is populated with several sized cats, the larger one beside the central figure appears to be spraying on her chair. The books laying on the floor are all cat related.
The group of four are contained within a curtained enclosure but there is another lady secretly listening to the conversation on the other side of the curtain with a look of dismay on her face.
Etched by George Cruikshank (1792-1878) and published in Thomas McLean’s ‘Cruikshankiana’ in London in 1835.
