A 19th century mahogany and brass pill making machine with a removable pill tray.

These machines first appeared in the 1750’s but became more frequently used by chemist’s shops from the 1840’s. Pill’s were made by mixing medicinal powders together with a binding agent and were then rolled by hand on the machine into a pipe of the correct length. The pipe is placed across the grooved brass plate and cut into pills by using the detachable cutting roller.
