Palais Royale Mother of Pearl Needle Case Circa 1820

Description

A French Palais Royale gold mounted mother of pearl needle case, circa 1820, one side mounted with a cartouche of an enamelled pansy.

For collectors of needlework tools Palais Royale examples are highly sought after. The name refers to the Palace in Paris, built for Cardinal Richelieu in 1629 ,which on his death, passed to the French royal family. It had a variety of uses and in the 18th Century became a place of recreation, housing a circus, wax works, gaming houses, cafes and brothels as well as galleries and shops selling only the finest wares. In the early 19th century it was the fashionable place to be seen and some of the most desirable needlework tools for which the Palais Royal is famous were made in this period. They are often decorated with a small pansy.
