This Victorian Vesta case is something truly remarkable! Crafted from Sterling Silver with gold gilt on the inside, it is fully hallmarked for Chester 1886. The box is engraved throughout, featuring flowers, animals and scenic themes on either side.
Vesta cases are small portable boxes that were used to keep matches dry. They were made from precious and non-precious metals. The purpose of the Vesta case is also to prevent the matches from igniting. Usually, the base of the vesta case has a serrated edge, known as the striker, which this piece does. Vesta cases were part of the essential ''dress code'' of the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, making these now a highly collectable item.
