Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French cylinder desk, or bureau a cylindre, is a writing desk featuring a curved, quarter-cylindrical shutter that rolls back to reveal the interior writing surface and fitted drawers. Developed in 18th-century France, this design allowed users to instantly secure working documents by simply closing the revolving top.

These desks were typically constructed using fine exotic woods such as kingwood, tulipwood, and mahogany, often featuring geometric parquetry or marquetry veneers. They were further embellished with gilded bronze or brass mounts, known as ormolu, and often included leather-lined writing slides.

Authentic 19th-century French pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, original oak or pine secondary drawer linings, and precisely cast, hand-chased brass mounts. Look for maker stamps or lock plates inscribed by prominent Parisian cabinetmakers of the period.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office, hallway, or living area, pairing it with clean-lined seating or subtle task lighting. Its detailed woodwork contrasts well against neutral walls or modern minimalist artwork.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to protect the wood finish.
