Description
Edgar Hunt (1876-1953) Donkeys, ducks and pigeons beside a thatched barn, oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1920 lower left. In excellent condition, presented in period style swept gilt wood frame. Painting dimensions: 56 cm x 76.5 cm. Sold previously at Tennnants Auctioneers, July 2010, lot 1062, hammer price £30,000. Edgar Hunt was born in Birmingham in 1876. His compositions were mostly of rustic farmyard scenes in which poultry, calves, pigs and rabbits often featured. His work is meticulous with not a feather or hair out of place. His style is instantly recognisable and remained very much in demand by his patrons throughout his career, many of whom were nostalgic for the simple country life of the days before the Industrial Revolution. His paintings are easily relatable and the intrinsic detail he paints elicits a strong emotional response when studying the animals he so charmingly paints and his own lifelong devotion to animals shines through. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Hunt died in 1953.
