ABOUT ARTIST SIR PETER LELY
Born Soest, Westphalia, 14 September 1618; died London, 30 November 1680).
Painter of Dutch origin who spent almost all his career in England and was naturalized in 1662. His family name was originally van der Faes, and the name Lely is said to have come from a lily carved on the house in The Hague where his father was born.
Lely was born in Germany (where his father, a captain of infantry, was stationed) and trained in Haarlem.
He moved to England in the early 1640s (early biographers say 1641 or 1643), and although he first painted figure compositions in landscapes (Sleeping Nymphs, c.1650, Dulwich Picture Gal., London), he soon turned to the more profitable field of portraiture where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court.
-
This would have been Artist Sir Peter Lely’s first commission when arriving in England and depicted the King as he appeared at the end of his life.
-
As an early work, the influence of Van Dyke is apparent in Lely’s depiction which makes this portrait a desirable work of art to acquire.

ABOUT KING CHARLES 1ST
Charles I (19 November 1600 – 30 January 1649 was monarch of the three kingdoms of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27 March 1625 until his execution in 1649.
Charles was the second son of King James VI of Scotland, but after his father inherited the English throne in 1603, he moved to England, where he spent much of the rest of his life. He became heir apparent to the English, Irish and Scottish thrones on the death of his elder brother, Henry Frederick, Prince of Wales, in 1612. An unsuccessful and unpopular attempt to marry him to a Spanish Habsburg princess culminated in an eight-month visit to Spain in 1623 that demonstrated the futility of the marriage negotiations. Two years later he married the Bourbon princess Henrietta Maria of France instead.
