This charming George III oak Welsh dresser (Circa 1770 - 1790), from North Wales or Angelsey, is particularly attractive. The oak has retained a warm and inviting colour, and its six drawers, surprisingly, appear to have the majority of their original swan neck handles and rope-edged oval backplates (fashionable during this period) still in situ. The original wide backboards have, over their lifetime, been decorated with many layers of green paint associated with this region. Antique dressers are perfect vehicles for displaying both contemporary and antique dinner services and provide much-needed storage within the kitchen. This example has six drawers, each traditionally constructed with hand-cut nails, as well as plenty of cupboard space, one of which is lockable with a key supplied. The top lifts off the base for ease of transport, or you could store it and use the base independently if so desired. As you expect, after over two hundred years, there are some indications of it being used for its original purpose, which is good to see, and part and parcel of the appeal of antique country furniture - these signs of honest repair and renovation remind us that these were the work-horses of the country kitchen, used day in, day out, for generations. Thankfully, because dressers were so important to family life, many, like this example, have remained in good honest usable condition and like their previous owners, each has a different personality and character.
