Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Lighting from this era often combined traditional blacksmithing techniques with Gothic Revival and Arts & Crafts influences. Craftsmen utilised hand-forged steel or iron embellished with polished brass elements, openwork cage scrolls, and decorative drip pans.

Period wall sconces were predominantly constructed using wrought iron, mild steel, and cast or spun brass. The ironwork was frequently treated or blackened to resist corrosion, while brass accents provided decorative contrast and light reflection.

Authentic pieces feature irregular hammer marks from manual forging, hand-cut metal edges, and visible joinery such as rivets or collared joints rather than modern continuous welds. Natural surface patination and historical wiring entry points also indicate age.

Forged metal sconces create strong visual contrast against lime-washed, plaster, or neutral painted walls. They work effectively positioned on either side of a chimneypiece, lining a hallway, or flanking architectural features to add texture and depth.

Steel components should be kept dry and periodically dusted with a soft cloth; a light application of microcrystalline wax protects against surface rust. Brass elements can be gently wiped to remove dust while avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip historical patina.
