Here is a very large and imposing watercolour painting of an English country cottage garden in full bloom - alive with Hollyhocks, Delphiniums and Rambling Roses.
The painting has a certain light quality to it that reminds me of early evening, with the doves coming in to roost on the porch roof, whilst the eye is drawn to a tantalising glimpse of the sea, just visible through a crumbling ancient archway. I can just imagine how the garden would lie heavy with the scent of Honey suckle, the stones still warm from the heat of the daytime sun.
Jane Utley painted this in 1928, and has signed it lower right, and also added a name plate on the back of the painting with the title taken from the 18th Century poem ''The Landslip'' by William Shenstone. ''''Has ever scene so deck''d with Flowers were ever flowers so gay''
The painting measures 70cm by 60cm framed, the image being 50cm by 40cm. The colours are bright and vibrant, with just the surface wear to the frame that would be expe
...cted of an item of this age.
