The natural ivory-wool ground of this Afshar half saddle-bag, contains stylised roses surrounded by a main border depicting stylised camels.

The bag, made circa 1880, which was once, one half of a pair of double saddle-bags, has long lost its partner, although this half bag is complete with its madder-red plain-weave back with slits and lappits at the top.

An Afshar saddlebag face, traditionally known as a khorjin panel, is a hand-woven pile textile created by nomadic Afshar tribes in southern Persia. These panels originally formed the decorative front of double bags used for transport and storage across the Kerman province.

These textiles are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation. The yarns are dyed using natural vegetable and plant extracts, resulting in saturated indigo blues, madder reds, and soft ivory tones.
