Early C19th Italian ‘Grand Tour’ souvenir bronze reduction, after the antique, of “The Dancing Faun of Pompeii” .
Superbly detailed cast bronze copy of the iconic mythical faun excavated in 1830 at ill-fated Pompeii , from the site of a villa known now as “Casa del Fauno” , where it stood in the courtyard next to the impluvium , a basin designed to collect rain-water .
The faun depicted in a state of exultation and ecstasy, his arms raised in dance , his muscular body taut. The mythical bearded creature with horns in his hair and a tail above his buttocks. The figure entirely naked except for a fig-leaf .
Mounted upon a plinth of figured ‘giallo di Siena’ or Convent Siena , marble .
In excellent original condition, having achieved an excellent ‘skin’ and patina . The ‘chocolate brown’ patina with atmospheric areas of wear to the original lacquered surface.
The original sculpture now exhibited in the Museo Nazionale, Naples , Italy.
