Hotei, a Boxwood Carved Okimono, Meiji Period.

19th century
Description

Japanese boxwood okimono of Hotei, signed, c. 1890, Meiji Period. Finely carved as Hotei, the Japanese God of good fortune and good luck, carrying his treasure sack. The figure is expressively carved, open mouthed, with a huge smile, bare breasted, with his huge belly protruding over his tied robes.

His sack is tied over a pole, that he carries over his shoulder, and contains gifts of good fortune that he distributes amongst children and those in need.

Bearing an excellent patination.

Signed to the base.

Height – 11.5 cm, 4 1/2”.

Width – 8 cm, 3 1/8”.

Depth – 7 cm, 2 3/4”.

Condition – Excellent. No damage.
